Settlement Hierarchy
A hierarchy is an order of importance. Some settlements are more important than others. This is because they are larger, have more functions, and have greater populations than others. In a settlement hierarchy there are fewer settlements at the top than at the bottom. For example there may be thousands of small villages in China, but there are only a few large cities like Beijing & Shanghai. When large cities grow so big that they join together, they create a conurbation. If two or more conurbations join together, then a megalopolis is created. Tokyo in Japan is a good example of a megalopolis. Task 3 - Complete the settlement hierarchy activities sheet.
