Introduction:
Before the Great Leap Forward Mao gave land to the peasants in a huge act of Land Reform. Why did he do this? Before you begin on the drama complete these activities:
1. In class reading to set the scene: Life on the land before the Communist Revolution
2. In class simulation of how the land was divided before land reform
3. After the simulation discuss what the problem was and what the solution could be. Are there any problems with the solutions you propose? How can they be overcome?
Assessment task:
Your task is to create a drama to show the effects of the Great Leap Forward on the lives of the peasants in China. You should work in a group of 4 or 5. Each group should choose one of the following topics to focus their drama on. The dramas should then be performed in chronological order to show the situation in China before, during and after the Great Leap Forward.
1. Land Reform in 1950 and the Speak Bitterness campaigns
2. Agricultural reform during the Great leap Forward (communes).
3. Steel production in the Great Leap Forward (backyard furnaces)
4. Life in the cities during the Great Leap Forward
5. Famine and the political effects of the Great Leap Forward.
You will be assessed on criteria A and D.
